I chose a photograph of my dog for this assignment. I realized that it is furry and extremely difficult to trace! After many failed attempts, I finally found the wrinkle tool in Illustrator which allows me to simulate the fur of my dog.
For the third abstraction, I wanted to keep the eyes of the dog. However, since I inverted the colors, and the eyes have to be white. White eyes look abnormal, even spooky. As a result, I decided to do away with them. The fourth abstraction is an indexical representation, keeping only the face of the dog. At the fifth abstraction, the image loses specificity and develops general meaning, as it can be any animal from the canine family, e.g. foxes or wolves. (I didn’t realize my dog looks so much like these wild animals…)

For the symbol, I rotated the fourth abstraction and cleaned up the outlines. I thought the image suggests a triangular border, which is why I added a diamond-shaped border. I have tried a variety of colors for the border, and even fills, but I think red is most suitable with black and white. The end result is a symbol that reminds me of road signs (maybe it’s the color combination) and/or of danger (because of the red?). However, both concepts aren’t really related to dogs. Finally, I thought of guard dogs, which may be suitable.
P.S. I don’t look like someone who will ever open a company related to guard dogs though. And my dog is supposed to be adorable, not dangerous :(
